XR - The ability to revive all of your pilots inside X-WING! Coming Soon: Briefing Editor. (2.x) Coming Soon: On-line Help. (2.0) -= About the Author =- I decided to do one for X-WING, after looking at the editors that are out there. Most of them were either a pain to use, Buggy, or incomplete. Currently, my editor supports ALL versions of X-WING and ALL versions of Tie Fighter. It also supports most of the things that can be edited. I spent many, many, many hours deciphering the Pilot, Mission, Briefing, and other select locations in other X-WING files (The Briefing was the hardest). There is very little I don't know about these files, I have several programs I programmed in-house that I use to make sure that the files are deciphered correctly. Also the "X-WING Official Strategy Guide" was helpful by making sure that the first three TOD's were deciphered correctly. A little about myself, well I've been programming since C64 days. I also have formal training on the hardware and Software repair of both Macintosh's and PC's. Also thanks to "id Software" I have some experience in doing on-line bbs tech support. (Plug: Any game company want to hire me to do On-line Tech support?) In other words, I know a lot about a lot of different areas, from programming software to fixing hardware and software problems to phone and email tech support. -= BUGS =- Hopefully you won't find any bugs, but if you manage to find a bug that I missed during the Testing cycle, Please let me know via the addresses below. -= Shareware =- Since I spent so much time on this project (I never guessed it would take me this much time), I'm releasing it as shareware for $15. Please note, all upgrades to date have been FREE! As far as I can see I plan on continuing this policy. If you can download the latest shareware version then your upgrade is free. So, $15 is a reasonable price considering I plan on doing still a ton of new stuff with this program in each release. Even though X-WING & Tie Fighter are separate games, one registration gets you support for both programs in ONE editor! X-WING Support: What I've done to the shareware version is deactivated Tour 4 & 5 editing, Deactivated Mission Saving, and Removed the copy protection removal function. Otherwise it's fully working version of X-WING Pro. Tie Fighter Support: What I've done to the shareware version is deactivate Tour 6+ editing. and removed the copy protection removal function. XR: XR's Limitation is only being able to activate it 3 times. -= Letting Me Know =- -= Or Getting the latest version =- If you have any questions you can Mail me a letter via: U.S. Post Office = 1997 Cluster Pine Rd. Colton, Ca 92324-8400 Phone (Voice) and leave a message, I work full time so I won't be able to respond to it until the evening or the next day: 1-909-875-3219. You can get the latest version or contact me two ways: Software Creations = email "Nathan Anderson" at 1-508-368-7036 or Via the Internet = email "NATHAN.ANDERSON@SWCBBS.COM" -= Software Creations =- Software Creations - "Home of the Authors" - 508-378-7036. In my many (many!) years of BBS'ing, I have never found a better BBS than Software Creations. I am not alone in thinking Software Creations is the BEST BBS. They have TWO years in a row won BEST BBS from the "Boardwatch" magazine, which is a BBS industry magazine. In addition to being able to find my products on-line on Software Creations, you can also find several other major shareware and commercial software vendors on-line. -= XR.COM =- This utility, I put together so that you don't have to exit X-WING to revive your pilot. X-Wing has built into it a Revive feature, but it will take your score, rating and other information and reset it. XR has been designed to restore your pilots the same way the game does except, it will not steal your score or any other stuff. When you die or get captured, Hit ALT-R when X-Wing starts to play the animation of you being captured or being sent off dead. This will cause XR to kick in, and revive your pilot BEFORE you get back to the main menu. If you wait to long and you do it at the menu, you will have to click on the information button, and then return back to the main menu. Upon hitting the HOTKEY, XR will beep once, then after restoring all of your pilots it will beep again. If XR has been deactivated it will not BEEP and it will not restore any of your pilots. Command Line: XR - Load XR with the default ALT-R hot-key. XR /? - Help XR /U - Unload XR from memory XR /Kx - Load XR with the Hot key ALT-x (Where x is any key) *** Notice XR is limited in that it will only activate 3 times. By registering you will be able to activate it unlimited amount of times. -= XP.EXE =- -= Command Line =- XP can be started be a variety of ways. Starting XP without any parameters, will start you in the main menu. Starting XP with a '/P' or '-P' will place you in a listing of pilots that you can edit. Starting XP with a '/M' will place you into a listing of Mission files. Starting XP with a '/O' will stick you in the Other Menu. Starting XP with a '/T' will stick you in the TOD menu. Starting XP with a '/B' will stick you in the Briefing Listing. Starting XP with any of the above plus the name of the file will stick you in their respected editors. Starting XP '-P' plus a file will open the file and check to see if the pilot is dead/captured if it is it will revive the pilot and quit to DOS. Otherwise it will stick you in the pilot editor. Starting XP '-E' plus a file will force XP to stick you in the pilot editor. And last but not least, XP *.PLT or XP NA?HAN?.PLT will revive all pilots matching the wild cards. Summary: XP - Main Menu XP /P - Pilot file Listing XP /M - Mission file Listings XP /O - Other Menu XP /B - Briefing file Listings XP /T - Tour of Duty file Listings XP /P - Checks if pilot is dead, if so revives pilot. If Not Edits. XP /E - Forces XP to Edit pilot. XP /M - Opens Mission file and Edits it. XP /B - Opens Briefing file and Edits it. XP *.PLT - Revives all Dead Pilots XP NAT?.PLT - Revives all pilots matching the Wild cards. -= Main Menu =- The Main Menu will give you 6 choices, you may either move the cursor up/down or hit the first letter that's highlighted to select it. Options: P) Pilot Editor - Will Stick you in the Pilot Listing M) Mission Editor - Will Stick you in the Mission Listing B) Briefing Editor - Will Stick you in the Briefing Listing T) TOD Editor - Will Stick you in the TOD Listing O) Other X-Wing Stuff - Will Stick you in the Other Menu ESC) Return to DOS - Quits XP -= Pilot Listing =- The Listings are probably one of my favorite things in XP, they display fifty file names in a list that you can choose one by using the cursor keys (Up/Down/Left/Right) and the to select one. Upon selecting one you will be put into the Pilot Editor. If there are more than fifty pilot files in the directory, another option will appear. By hitting 'N' you will go to the next page of files or by hitting 'P' you will go to the prior Page. Also available in the Pilot Listing is the 'R' command, it will revive a dead/Captured pilot. You may notice that the names are not all the same color, if a name is in red that means the pilot is captured, if in black it means the pilot is dead, otherwise the pilot is alive and not captured. You may also use '2' - Change to Mission Listing, '3' - Change to Briefing Listings. -= Mission Listings =- This listing acts the same way that the Pilot one does except for two things One is that there is no 'Revive command, and two is if you highlight a file that is a Original X-wing Mission (Tours 1-5) it bring up a window with the mission Full Name, Mission Tour Number, and Mission Number. -= Playing your Missions =- You can rename one of the existing missions, and rename your mission to X-Wing's mission name or edit a TOUR of DUTY and add your mission. For a complete listing of missions see mission.lst. -= Briefing Listings =- Identical to the Mission Listings. Except that its for briefings. ----- Not in place yet! ---- -= Other Menu =- 1. Remove Copy Protection - Will Remove the Copy protection from X-wing, So far I can remove it from the five versions that I have (Original V1.0, Tour 4 V1.1, Tour 4 V1.1a with bugs removed and Tour 5 V1.2, CD v1.5). It will also remove v1.0 & v2.0 of Tie Fighters Copy Protection. When the game asks you for the copy protection you just hit . 2. Enable/Disable Cheat Flag - Built into the game is three cheat buttons, however if you use them, the games will consider it a trial run. What I've done is made a option to Disable the Detection, and then re-enable if you want it back. 3. Edit Ships - This will allow you to edit the Ships attributes (Like Speed, Firepower, Shields, ect...). 4. Cheat Key - This will give you the Cheat Key to use while playing X-wing. 5. X-wing Info - This will give you complete information on what XP see, if you are having a problem with one of the editors, try this option to make sure that XP is seeing all of the files and that the files aren't "Unknown" -- If they are Unknown please contact Master Tech, or download a later version of XP. -= Copy Protection Removal =- I have been asked several times why, if I profess to be against pirating, that I have included a feature to remove the copy protection. I have a couple of reasons. The first thing that will turn me off to a game is a intrusive copy protection. Personally I prefer to glance at the manual, install the program, stick everything in the original box, and store the box away. I don't want to have to pull out a stupid manual every time I want to play a game. So typically I either try to remove the copy protection myself (X-wing, Tie Fighter and X-COM) or I look for a patch that will do it. GAME COMPANIES: If you want to do a copy protection, look at how "Lemmings II: The Tribes" did it. I bet that 99.9% of the people who installed that game wasn't even aware it had a copy protection. It is one the only games I know that shows what a good non intrusive copy protection is. If I was giving away awards, Psygnosis would get one for that! Please note that the Copy Protection Removal feature is for your PERSONAL use only. Do not use it to pirate it! Pirates: Every copy that is pirated means less money for Lucas Arts to develop the next killer GAME! Besides that fact that it is ILLEGAL. -= Tour Editor =- Warning: X-WING CD has the Tour File on the CD, so unfortunately you can't modify it. In 2.0 I hope to release a TSR to get around this and allow you to edit it. If XP detects the CD version it disable Tour Editing. Basically the TOD (Tour of Duty) Editor is what allows you to create a TOD that you can either Distribute, or play your self. The TOD is basically a group of missions that you play (I.E. X-WING's TOD 4 is "Imperial Pursuit"). You will be able to save/load/delete TOD's from two spots - One is from the game X-WING. If you load/save from X-WING all it does is load/save to the file that X-WING uses to figure out what missions are in a particular TOD. If you save to a External file, XP's TOD editor will not only save the information that X-WING needs, it will also save all of the MISSION/BRIEFING files that are needed to make a complete TOD -- All of this will be saved into the .XPT file that you pick/create. When you load from a external file, it will then copy all of your MISSIONS/BRIEFINGS into your X-WING's MISSION directory. This will make distributing your TOD's or playing other peoples TOD's easy, all files that are needed by the game X-WING will be stored in one file. Another thing you can do is delete a TOD, by deleting a TOD from X-WING it will delete all MISSION/BRIEFING files that belong to this TOD. By deleting it from a external .XPT file it will delete all information that was needed for that TOD from the .XPT file. Also when you first run the TOD editor it will create a BACKUP for your original files -- This file is almost 1 megabyte with all 5 tours installed. DO NOT DELETE THIS FILE as it is the only place your backups are at... If you do, It will attempt to recreate another backup file (However this file may not be correct if you have changed any missions/TOD's in X-WING) -= Pilot Editor =- Basically these menus are self explanatory, However I will point out one thing. The "2) Edit Tours" & "3) Edit Pilot by Tours". I implemented the system twice one by a menu and the second you scroll through the names of the tours/Missions. -= Mission Editor =- Basically you have on the Top part of the menu 16 Crafts (On the Left) and 16 Object (on the right), by hitting on any one you will go into their respected editor. By Hitting you will delete one, and by hitting on a Unused spot you will add on. At the Bottom of this there are 4 additional mission related commands: M) Edit Mission Messages - This is used to change the message that you get when you successfully finish a mission. L) Length of Mission: - This is the number of minutes that this mission lasts. E) Pilot Eject: - This allows you to have the pilot either captured or rescued when the pilot ejects during a mission. D) Deathstar Mission: - This allows you to set this mission as being on the surface of the Deathstar or in space. Craft Editor: Group Name: - This is the name of the craft when you ID them in X-WING. NOTICE: Currently XP doesn't support the LEVEL?.XWI files, because they have over 16 objects and have no crafts. -= Graphical Mission Editor =- Well, Actually Its pretty simple. You simply click the left mouse button to pick up and drop a ship or object. And you click the right mouse button to edit a ship or object. If you pick up a ship you can delete it by clicking inside the craft box. The same goes for a Object, to delete it just drop it inside the object box. You can scroll either by using the buttons or by using the cursor keys on your keyboard. To exit hit ESC or click the button on exit. When you pick up a ship or object the cursor will change to the shape of the ship or object, to let you know that you have it. -= Editing Ships =- Tie Fighter: Rack Editing was not added, if I get several requests to add it, I might release a v1.52 with Rack editing. However I would prefer to dedicate my time to X-WING PRO v2.00 rather than work on the 1.5x series. X-WING: Most of the Information is self explanatory, however the weapon racks are confusing, The ship can have a max number of 12 mounting racks for the energy and missile type weapons. Basically the racks are were the guns are mounted on your craft, they also control how may guns you have. If you have a Laser configured for racks 1-5, you will have 5 Lasers. You can also put more than one weapon on a rack, You just map multiple weapons to the same group of racks. Notice: When you choose more than two energy guns they work but the display of which weapon you are using seems to get corrupted. Also when you pick energy weapons for torpedoes you will see the same behavior. Warning: Please make sure that if you are going to use any energy weapons in the 3rd & 4th energy weapon spot, please have a weapon is slot 1. Otherwise it may crash or do other weird things. Warning: If you set your shields too high X-WING may not let you use the 'S' key to cycle around your shields. It also may not let you use the transfer power option either. -= Tutorials =- -= How to Create a Mission =- Well it pretty simple, follow the steps bellow and you will have a playable mission. 1. Create a New Mission (Use the Create a New Mission in the Mission Menu) 2. Name it "ROGUE" 3. Go to the Craft List and select on of the "Craft - Unused" by hitting This will stick you into the Craft Editor!
