Fleet Commander Directive: Effective 09-24-17
The Interactive Tour of Duty

Purpose of this document is to explain the ITOD and scoring system to members of the RS.

The current ITOD system is designed so that the actions of the RS membership have a direct impact upon our fictional storyline. This is done using two things: Activities and Objectives.

  • Activities can be individual games if they are particularly popular within the RS, such as X-Wing Alliance or our homebrewed d6RPG. More general pursuits may be grouped together as activity such as Writing or Mobile Gaming.
  • Activities that have consistently high levels of participation will have an Objective.
  • Objectives present a challenge or series of challenges for members of the RS to attempt to overcome over the course of an ITOD Session. The completion of said objectives (or failure thereof) will determine the course of the RS storyline for the next activity session.

Here is the template for a typical activity:

    Activity Objective Template

    Template begins

    • (A short name for your objective, this will appear on the RS site on the right-hand nav bar. Note that the activity name (e.g. ‘XWA’, ‘Galaxies’) will automatically be displayed.)
    • (A brief fictional description of what your objective is doing in the grand scheme of the RS fiction. As with all of the fiction sections in this template, you may either leave a brief suggestion, general idea, short blurb, or fully realized description of what your objective will accomplish. The Executive Staff will review your fictional contribution and work with you to edit it as necessary to make it fit with the RS storyline.)
    • Participant Overall Objective: (Give a brief, general description of the activity an RS member will be participating in.)
    • Individual Scoring: (How to report, what criteria will be used to produce a participant’s final score (e.g. number of reports, most kills, etc etc))
    • RS Defeat: (The fictional repercussions to the RS for failing to achieve any victory condition)
    • Stalemate: (The fictional repercussions to the RS for achieving a stalemate)
    • Objective: (The conditions neccessary to achieve a stalemate. Generally, this objective should be achievable with a little bit less than could have been accomplished with the participation observed in the previous session. (e.g. 5 participants reported 20 matches last session. Your objective could be ‘3 unique pilots participated, at least 10 matches submitted’))
    • Minor RS Victory: (The fictional repercussions for the RS in achieving a minor victory)
    • Objective: (The conditions necessary to achieve a ‘minor’ victory. Generally, this objective should be achievable with slightly more than could have been accomplished with the participation observed in the previous session. (e.g. using the example above, this could be ‘5 unique pilots participated, at least 25 matches submitted, 5 of which must be A-Wing vs A-wing’)
    • Major RS Victory: (The fictional repercussions for the RS in achieving a major victory)
    • Objective: (The conditions necessary to achieve a ‘major’ victory. Generally, this objective should be achievable with a significant increase in activity over the previous session, or include an in-activity goal that is particularly difficult to achieve. (e.g. over the course of two months, players must build a to-scale ISD-II in minecraft; 10 unique pilots participate, 40 matches submitted, 5 of which must be A-Wing vs A-Wing, 10 of which must be with participants not currently in the RS or from ‘rival’ clubs)

    Template ends

As you can see, there are several levels of victory that can be achieved. For each one, the fictional consequences and the completion requirements are given. If the activity were X-Wing Miniatures, the activity may look something like this:

    Objective Example, X-Wing Miniatures

    Operation Stinky Mynok
An RS taskforce has been deployed to lure Titan forces away from Aurora as the mainline fleet begins its attack. Engage any fighters and/or capital ships encountered and assure they do not retreat to reinforce Titan’s Aurora assets.
    • Participant Overall Objective: Participate in X-Wing Miniatures battles using the Vassal table-top emulation (or in person if you know a local RSer!).
    • Individual Scoring: Report your matches using the Generic Activity reporter (From the left-hand navigation bar, Reporters -> Generic Reporter). Once you have at least one match reported, report on this objective including a link to that match (e.g. http://www.rebelsquadrons.org/multiplayer/mp_nc_match?id=3803 ). At the end of the session, the task force leader will score all participants (from 1 to 10) based on the number of valid reports submitted. Individual(es) with most matches played at end of session will get a custom X-wing Minis card made for their character (at Cody’s discretion).
    • RS Defeat: Titan’s periphery forces hypered away to reinforce its Aurora-based fleet. RS forces will face an increased Titan presence in the Aurora Sector next session.
    • Stalemate: The majority of Titan’s outer picket forces were able to retreat to reinforce the main fleet and warn it. No net change to the strategic balance in Aurora.
    • Objective: AT LEAST two (2) unique people participate in at least one match throughout the session and report it via the activities reporter.
    • Minor RS Victory: The majority of Titan’s outer picket forces were destroyed, though some may have made it back to the Aurora fleet to warn it. The RS taskforce suffered minor casualties. Defending Aurora will be slightly easier next session.
    • Objective: More than two (2) unique people participate in at least two matches throughout the session and report it via the activities reporter.
    • Major RS Victory: The RS overwhelmed and silenced Titan’s outer picket forces before they were able to retreat. A resounding victory with very minimal casualties on the RS side. Defending Aurora will be easier next session.
    • Objective: At least four (4) unique people participate in at least three matches throughout the session and report it via the activities reporter. In addition, at least one (1) of the matches played during the session must include the larger-class capital ships (Corvette, GR-75, Gozanti, Raider-class, C-ROC, etc.)
The overall objective of the activity is given along with the consequences of the different victory levels and instructions on how to achieve them. Fictional consequences for the club are not the only things that are taken into consideration. There is also Individual and Squadron scoring that takes place for each activity.

    Individual Scoring

For each activity, the member who performs the best will be awarded 10 ITOD points. If there are at least two participants who complete the activity, the worst performer will be awarded 1 ITOD point. All other participants will be awarded a point value between 1 and 10.

Continuing our example from above, consider the following session results for X-Wing Miniatures:
    • IronMan, a member of Resurrection Squadron, plays 6 matches of Miniatures, 3 with the capital ships. This is more than anyone else. He is awarded 10 points for being the best performer.
    • Naesa, from Red Dagger Squadron, plays 4 matches of Miniatures, 1 with capital ships. Not quite as good as IronMan, but better than the others. She is awarded 7 points.
    • Galen, also from Red Dagger Squadron, plays 3 matches of Miniatures, none with the capital ships. Despite being behind IronMan and Naesa, he’s still ahead of the final participant. He is awarded 4 points.
    • Yaihi’l, from Diamond Squadron, only played 1 match of Miniatures, the worst performance of anyone. He gets 1 point.
This is done for each activity. The individual points for each activity are added up at the end of each session. The individual with the most points overall becomes the RS ITOD Top Gun for the session. With this system, a member doesn’t have to be the best in every activity to win nor can someone performing exceptionally well in a single objective secure Top Gun. If one is the best in a few activities, they can still be beaten by someone who may not get as many points per activity but does more.
    As an example:
    • IronMan not only had the best performance in X-Wing Miniatures, but he also was the best in XvT Multiplayer and Fiction. However, he decided not to do any other activities. He has a total of 30 ITOD points.
    • Galen, on the other hand, participated in as many activities as possible. At the end of the session, he had participated in 5 different activities. On top of his 3 points from Minis, he earned 5 in Simming, 6 in Fiction, 8 in Empire at War MP, and 10 in X-Wing Alliance. He has a total of 32
Ignoring all other participants, note that while IronMan was the best at what he participated in, Galen got more points by participating in more activities and doing moderately well. In this example, Galen would be the RS ITOD Top Gun!

    Squadron Scoring

In addition to individual scores, there is also a Squadron score each session to determine the ITOD Top Squadron. The Squadron score is calculated by taking the score of the highest scoring member of a Squadron per activity and adding them together.
    Example:
    • We’ll take IronMan’s 30 ITOD points and add those to Resurrection’s total score. Since a squadron only earns their highest scoring member’s points, it wouldn’t matter if they also had participants that earned 5, 7, and 9 points in Fiction. Only IronMan’s highscore of 10 would count to the squad’s total. Assuming for a moment that the rest of the squadron mostly stuck to those same objectives and only added 3 points to that for a total of 33 points.
    • If Galen ended up being Diamond’s only contributing member for this session, Diamond’s score would be the same as Galen’s personal score: 32.
    • While Red Dagger only got Naesa’s 7 points from the Miniatures activity they might have had a great showing in several of the other objectives and add 36 more points for a total of 43.
By participating in as many activities as they could, Red Dagger would win the Top Squadron award for our example session!
