Militant Leader Killed
Setome --- In a decisive blow, the notorious militant leader, known only to authorities as 'Old Scar', is dead, thanks to a Greeop Defence Force strike on a militant base in the Setome system. Old Scar was killed when his command ship, the corvette Nyax, was destroyed by Patriot Starfighter Group forces in the attack. The base itself was also annihilated with only a few survivors escaping via freighters.
The successful attack may indicate a turning point in the Republic Shield's efforts to re-secure the sector following the deployment of the majority of the task force's strength to the Subterrel Sector four months ago. Opinion polls on inhabited worlds in the sector seem to suggest increased confidence in the New Republic to maintain law and order in the region, which took a heavy blow when the medical frigate Vespia was destroyed in a militant raid several weeks ago.
When interviewed following the death of Old Scar, Fleet Admiral Trebonious-Astoris refused to comment on the matter. "In our position, we do not have the luxury of considering the public's views and opinions every time we take action. Our only concern at this time is that innocent civilians are protected and that the groups plaguing the Greeop Sector are brought to justice as swiftly as possible."
Given the loss of the Vespia, the Greeop Defence Force has increased escorts and patrols of major trade routes in the region to ensure the safety of civilian convoys. But considering the sheer number of militant bands causing trouble in the region, the general consensus indicates that it will take a long time before the Greeop Sector sees a complete return to the secure region it once was.
