RSCD NL 10-27-02

Welcome to the last NL of October, where the only scary thing is what we did to other clubs this week. I've got some things to discuss about ORW2 and the ITOD, so let's get started.

----------------------------------------------------------------

RSCD ITOD-

The RSCD Interactive Tour of Duty has been going on during the past week, but so far the participation is a bit low. For those who were not aware, the ITOD is a series of missions involving interactive fiction and Jedi Outcast play. Those who apply for a mission will be sent a unique fictional briefing that will detail the nature of the mission and it's objective. Also included in the briefings are situations in which participants must choose between options to continue the mission in different paths. The choice made will determine the second phase of the mission, the JO aspect. Choosing to disregard orders during a mission may keep you out of harm's way entirely, but it could also land you in a near impossible SP or MP battle.

The JO aspect of missions will be fairly straightforward, but with a few things you may not yet be used to. For each JO match, you'll be limited to using only what you're given during a mission, meaning that if the only weapon you have before a mission is a bryar, you'd be unable to use anything else. While it may seem a bit unfair, I believe people will enjoy the challenge and the realsim this adds to our storyline. As story progresses and the RSCD begins switching from defensive to offensive, chances to acquire more weapons will be given.

For those who don't own JO, you'll still be able to participate in missions through the fiction aspect of the ITOD, and in fact all members are encouraged to write fictional accounts of their adventures. All fiction, including the ongoing backstory of the ITOD will be archived in the RSCD library for everyone to read.

Each month we'll be completing a different chapter of the ITOD's storyline, with an ITOD NLs summarizing the action up to date every few weeks. For anyone curious as to the storyline of this ITOD, I've included the intro of it below.

RSCD ITOD Introduction-

Within a large, dimly lit storeroom deep within the Knight Spire mountain installation, you sit upon a supply crate and look at your surroundings. Crowded around you are remnants of the Rebel Squadrons Commando Division. After a quick scan of the crowd you see a number of familiar faces, but an even greater number seem to be missing. Trying to forget the horrific events of the previous day, you focus your attention towards the tall figure standing at the front of the storeroom.

Vice Admiral Kaz Falcion, leader of the now ravaged RSCD, stands silently before the assembled commandos, trying to think of the right words to say.

"It's not much. but I'll fill all of you in on what we know at this point. Yesterday at approximately 0300 hours, unknown forces began an assault on the Knight Spire installation. Due to the total surprise of the attack, and the size of the invading force, we weren't able to hold them back for more than a few hours before being forced to fall back to the lower levels. We don't have exact numbers, but from the losses during the initial battle and those as we fell back ..those of you here may be all that we have left."

As the Admiral pauses to let the information sink in, a quiet murmur passes through the crowd. Everyone present had seen firsthand the massacre of the first attack, but until now, few had given thought to the idea that casualties could possibly be so high. You're unsure what to think of this news. Friends and comrades seen every day were gone forever, and as of yet no one knew exactly how or why it had happened. Attempting to hide a pained expression, you once again turn your eyes to the front of the room, hoping for answers.

"Furthermore, as of now it would appear that we've been effectively cut off from the rest of the Rebel Squadrons. Our communication array was disabled in the early minutes of the attack, so we never got a chance to send out a distress signal."

Catching the Vice Admiral's attention from your place against the wall, you interrupt his briefing by asking about the fate of the RSCD's small task force, lead by the Liberty Cruiser flagship Vendetta.

"Believe me, you're not the only one wondering what happened to the Vendetta. We know the invasion force landed by shuttle, presumably sent from a larger ship in the system. What we don't know is why the task force was unable to send us any advance warning on the attack. At this time, I'm afraid we must assume the Vendetta and her escorts have been captured or destroyed."

A fresh wave of dread hits you at the dragon's response. Up until now, you had assumed that at the very least, the Vendetta task force would be able to contact the other RS fleets and summon help. Looking around the room, it's apparent by the shocked expressions on the faces of the rest of the survivors that they had been thinking along the same lines. Not knowing what to say or even feel anymore, all of you stare blankly ahead and await the remainder of the briefing.

"I realize I've painted a pretty bleak picture of our situation right now....but believe it or not there are a few bright spots. As you know, the lower levels of Knight Spire were built with possible future emergencies in mind. Before the base was overrun we were able to seal the corridors leading here, and with any luck the invaders won't stumble across them for awhile. We have enough food and supplies in these storerooms to last down here for months if need be....but I for one don't intend on moving in just yet."

The dragon's last statements manage to grab your attention, and that of the commandos around you as well. They're the first positive words spoken since the attack, and they have not gone unnoticed.

"People, for the past few years I've been fortunate enough to call this place home, as have the rest of you. I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't let anyone push me around in my own home. I intend that those of us here do nothing less than let these invaders know exactly what happens when you pick a fight with the Rebel Squadrons. So….any volunteers?"

You glance once more around the room, noticing that all hands have silently gone up along with yours, wondering exactly what it is you have just volunteered to do.

ORW II

The second installment of the OuterRim War kicked off this past Saturday, and I'm happy to say that the RS more than kept up it's image from the last event. The top three RS members went a combined 37-3 on the day, all of which were wins in the ground battle. We had a great day as a fleet and a club, and I hope to see even more people come out next week to continue our winning streak. All RSCD members participating will be awarded merit points based on their ladder scores, and medals will also be awarded to those who do exceptionally well, so there's plenty of incentive to participate :)

For those unaware, ORWII takes place each Saturday from 2-11pm EST in #OuterRim on any Undernet IRC server. If you dont have time to play, at least make an effort to come out and support the RS.

Closing-

Since the ITOD info took up quite a bit of space, Ill close the NL a little short this week. Remember if you'd like to participate in the ITOD, send me an email with the words "ITOD Mission Request" in the subject and I'll get back to you as soon as I have time to write all the briefings up :P Till next time.
