Greetings again RSers,

It occurs to me that you may be wondering why non-Star Wars gaming is being encouraged, since there has been no official word on the matter in quite some time. While my upcoming words are not "official", they should serve to help clarify the matter.

The Rebel Squadrons has always been and (presumably) will always be about Star Wars. This is an extremely obvious statement given the nature of what we do around here, but nonetheless important to reiterate. The function of "casual gaming" (around here that means playing any non-Star Wars game) is to create camaraderie and enjoyment among members outside of the normal activities. This has been going on since the RS was founded, probably, but now we are acknowledging it and supporting it in certain ways. There have been many, many games in which RSers have met up and played together (GemStone, Kings of Chaos, Kingdom of Loathing, WoW, Counter-Strike, EverQuest, to name a few). This past April, Kaz created a forum devoted to casual gaming, which serves as a hub of information about non-Star Wars games that RSers play together:

How does this fit into the Star Wars universe? If you prefer to have in-character rationales for everything that's done in the Rebel Squadrons, you might think of these games as being played during downtime between missions, on datapads, holoscreens, and so on. I imagine that Command wouldn't mind games that hone reflexes, strategic thinking, teamwork, and other positive military attributes, as long as they don't interfere with active service. Asking "But how are people playing Mario Kart a long, long time ago?" is valid, but only if you also ask "But how is there an Internet in order for there to be an Internet Office?" (oops, did I just reason myself out of a job?)

Anyway, just like in-character downtime, you are welcome to play or not play casual games as you like, but I hope you do. It's a fun way to interact with your fellow RSers, and we may award some smaller medals or merits for certain leagues, tournaments, and so on, as the forum post linked to in my previous email notes. See you on Mario Circuit 4?

Casual games can be somewhat fun...sometimes. All depends on the game, really. I've wasted countless hours on the different versions of Tower Defense :)

Tower Defense has helped me kill many a day at work, as well as the game with the lasers and mirrors.

I agree with what was said above. For me casual gaming helps to keep morale up among all members and high morale is always a good thing to have.
