I. Foreword
Welcome, one and all, to what will be a slightly shorter than usual State of the Rebel Squadrons. In this address: a few new faces show up in the Executive Staff, a few major promotions are handed out, and we discuss some changes for the rest of 2014. Check the details below!
II. Personnel and Project Updates
Operations Officer - I am very pleased to announce that Brigadier General Nicolai Ginofev will be joining the Executive Staff as the new Operations Officer. Nico, also serving as Resurrection Squadron CO, will have a lot on his plate going forward. Everyone go out of your way to make things harder for him. Wait, no. I mean, I ask that everyone give him a hand as he takes on this new role. Welcome aboard, Nico! I'm glad to have you on the team.
Other Staff Changes - Fleet Admiral Kaz Falcion will no longer be serving as the Modern Gaming Coordinator, after stepping forward to assist me for the first months of my term as Fleet Commander. In addition, Colonel Teu Veld will no longer be filling the role of Rebel Squadrons Second Officer, after having assisted myself and Rear Admiral Lommax for the last several months. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank both of them for their service to the club. Further details will be forthcoming on new appointments to each of these roles.
Scoring Overhaul - The Executive Staff, in conjunction with High Command, is currently in the process of discussing a major overhaul to the scoring system. This would represent a major change to our current practices, with goals of increasing recognition of cross-platform participation, boosting the autonomy of Task Force Leaders, and recognizing both platform-specific and overall performance.
To allow for consideration and implementation of new ideas, there will NOT be a regular scoring session in November or December. The Top Squadron and Top Gun awards will not be awarded during these months. However, missions will still be available for play for the legacy flight simulators, and activity in X-Wing Miniatures and other platforms will be recognized at the end of each month.
Squadron Reorganization - After consideration, the XO and myself have decided to reorganize FireClaw and Gold Squadron into a new unit. Kirghy will be handling the Roster DB manipulation at some point in the next few days to make this a reality. Colonel Hermus "Eightball Maniac" Dogan will be the CO of the new combined unit. At the moment, the unit is retaining the Gold name, but Hermus has indicated that he wants to put it to a vote of the new members as to whether they want to stay with Gold, change to FireClaw, or potentially reactivate another unit name from our historical records. I look forward to seeing what the new combined unit can do!
III. Activities and Events
No special events or activities this month in light of the absence of a regular scoring session. However, as I'm sure most of you have seen, Good Old Games (GOG.com) just released X-Wing and TIE Fighter for download at $10 each. I encourage everyone to go pick them up if you can afford it, even if you maybe already own them (as I and most everyone probably does). As GOG's website says, there will be "more to come" from the LucasArts library. We can only hope that X-Wing: Alliance and X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter are up next...
IV. Promotions and Awards
Now, onto the part that most of you probably skipped down to see anyway: promotions and awards! To start, I need Captain Wayne77177, front and center! In what is fast becoming a tradition, Wayne has swept the leaderboard for X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, and X-Wing: Alliance. I am pleased to present you with another FOUR Citations of Victory for your outstanding performance.
A challenger has emerged, however, in Rear Admiral Kirghy Lommax. He came within a whisker of beating out Wayne on the X-Wing mission. Keep up the hard work, Wayne, or you might find yourself on the wrong side of the XO next time!
Moving on, can I have Fleet Admiral Michael Raven, front and center? Raven's face-meltingly awesome command of Star Wars Trivia pushed him just above Wayne77177's score to earn him the Singleplayer Top Gun Award for Operation Phantom Shadow. Congratulations, Raven!
Next up, can I have Colonel Kimiao Quinal, front and center? Kimi put in a last-ditch effort to try and move Red Dragon Squadron over Red Squadron for Top Squadron this month. As a result, he's earned 33.6 multiplayer points, and the Multiplayer Top Gun Award for Operation Phantom Shadow! Congratulations, Kimi!
Don't go anywhere yet, Kimi. Over the last several months, you've been active in a number of parts of the club. Your leadership of Red Dragon Squadron has made your team a contender for Top Squadron multiple times. At the same time, you've worked on the Minecraft Task Force and as an Alderman on High Command. For your hard work and efforts to better both Red Dragon Squadron and the club as a whole, I am pleased to promote you to the rank of Brigadier General. Congratulations!
Next up, can I have the members of Red Squadron please stand? Red Squadron, you have been top performers for months now. Red Dragon Squadron has been nipping at your heels, but you've pulled out yet another Top Squadron finish for Operation Phantom Shadow! Congratulations and well done, Red Squadron!
Red Squadron, you may be seated. Colonel Djo, please remain standing. For the last several months, Red Squadron has been a powerhouse that has dominated in the standings. Members of Red Squadron have received numerous awards and have earned accolades for their hard work, performance, and dedication. I believe it is high time that the leader of this unit be recognized for her hard work and dedication.
(Also, after many years, she's finally removed the accent marks from her name, making it much easier for me and all other club members to type.)
It is my great please to promote Colonel Ray Djo to the rank of Brigadier General. Congratulations, Ray! This was a long time in coming, but is well-deserved.
That concludes my awards and promotions for tonight. Congratulations to all of our awardees!
V. Conclusion
Though we won't have a formal scoring session this month, new missions will be up soon. Get out there and take the fight to the Imperials! Until next time, fly fast, shoot straight, and as always, may the Force be with you.
All the best,
Commodore Lamin Zykara
