I. Foreword

Greetings and Happy New Year, everyone! I hope that you all had peaceful and happy holidays. To ring in 2015, we have some new personnel, a new system for competition between the units, and a new custom X-Wing: Alliance mission. So, let's go party like a new Star Wars movie is coming out this year!

II. Personnel and Project Updates

Modern Gaming Coordinator - I'm pleased to announce that General Daryus Zalyn'Cya has agreed to join High Command as the new Modern Gaming Coordinator. Daryus will be reaching out to the club about new modern gaming initiatives in the next month. Welcome aboard, Daryus!

New Scoring System - This is a large change, so please read this area carefully. As you all know, we have taken a two-month break from our standard scoring sessions over the holidays. This has given High Command time to consider an alternative proposal for scoring.

One of the key issues we have always faced with the original scoring system was how to compare the contributions of members who did different things. This challenge has led to a lot of hard feelings and complications over the past nine months (and really over the last several years). At the end of the day, this was causing a lot of conflict among our members, in pursuit of something that was intended to be fun.

To try and fix this, we've come up with a new system which ties the club-wide leaderboard directly to how much each individual contributes to the overall Interactive Tour of Duty. This system involves specific "missions" for each scoring session (or "Operation"), and each mission is scored based on two questions: did you attempt the mission, and did you succeed?

Every session will have an opening briefing explaining the missions that are available during that session, and how many points are awarded for participating and succeeding (some missions will not have success criteria, depending on the storyline). Beyond that, the system is based on simple arithmetic; each person's score is the total of their points, each squadron's score is the total of their members' points. In the event of a tie, awards are distributed to both winners.

Obviously, this is a big change, but I want to stress that it only affects the club-wide leaderboard for Top Gun and Top Squadron. Each individual Task Force Leader can (and will) hold their own internal competitions and recognize performance with awards like the Citation of Victory and the various combat medals. The goal of this change is to make the club-wide competition work for us, rather than against us.

Finally, because of the changes to our scoring paradigm, the existing Rebel Squadrons leaderboard system won't be able to support the new system for the foreseeable future. Each session's briefing will include information on how to report for each event, and will include an individual to contact in case of questions.

III. Promotions and Awards

First, I'd like Commander Mia StormChaser, front and center! On her own initiative last month, Mia took the time to update all of the various rank pages on our wiki with the updated rank insignia currently being used on our uniforms. In appreciation for your work, I am pleased to award you a Merit Commendation. Congratulations!

Next, can I have Major Wayne77177, front and center? Wayne, as always, I am pleased to present you with another four Citations of Victory for your outstanding performance on the X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, and X-Wing: Alliance leaderboards. I'll have you know that a new mission for X-Wing: Alliance will be available this month - and I'm hopeful that it'll give you some challenge!

Hang around for a moment, Wayne, because I have a special award for you. Ladies and gentlemen, since joining the club 6 months ago, Wayne has earned 22 separate Citations of Victory for his performance in the legacy games. I cannot help but feel that this performance deserves recognition.

The Republic Shield Kalidor Crescent is our local medal of equal weight to the New Republic Kalidor Crescent. It is awarded in recognition of "exceptional dedication and perseverance" in a specific activity or event. Wayne, your dedication to the legacy flight simulators and your exceptional performance more than merit this award. It gives me great pleasure to present you with the Republic Shield Kalidor Crescent. Well done, Major!

Finally, can I have Fleet Admiral Michael Raven, front and center! Raven scored the only perfect score in Star Wars Trivia last month. Well done, Raven! It gives me great pleasure to present you with the Citation of Victory for your success. Congratulations!

IV. Conclusion

Welcome to the new year, everyone! The session briefing will be up soon, so charge your weapons and get ready to take the fight to the Empire. Until next time, as always, fly fast, shoot straight, and may the Force be with you.

All the best,

Commodore Lamin Zykara
Rebel Squadrons Fleet Commander
