I was angry. Angry at myself and the rust that had developed on my piloting skills. Angry for being away from the fleet for so long. Angry at the universe after nearly getting myself killed. I sighed to himself and started a breathing exercise to calm down. I was safe and in one piece. After a few minutes, I Popped open my cockpit and climbed out of the Tie Interceptor I had managed to get back home in more or less one piece. I then went in for debriefing, ready to kill someone over the assignment I just flown. When I arrived in the briefing room, no one had yet arrived to conduct the debrief of the mission. I reviewed what happened in my mind and composed myself. When I had finally calmed down, LGN Damon Lightwind arrived to go over the mission results.
“So what happened out there Brig? I just got back from the hanger deck and your bird looks shot to hell,” stated LGN Lightwind.
Well sir, the start of the mission went off without a hitch. I broke away from the transport and went full throttle into the mine field jenking to avoid the laser blasts. I noticed three different mind types. The usual laser mines and the ones with the missile were there, and I encounter a type of mine I have personally never seen before. This one shot an Ion bolt out as I approached the field. I was able to ID the tug and pass through the field successfully. I ordered the transport to stop as there was no way it would be able to survive long enough in the field until I could clear out some of the mines. I started making some passes and largely went for the laser and ion equipped mines first. Since that damn tie had no shields there was no way I was going for a missile mine until it was safer to do so. I started getting dinged up, There were just to many mines out there for me to succeed in this mission. Who in the galaxy came up with the idea to fly this mission in a craft with no shields?, they should be shot!” I yelled. I could feel my blood about to boil as I fought to control myself.
“NOW You listen Colonel!” Shouted LGN Lightwind. Your mouth is about to write a check you can’t cash!” There is a reason for everything. You’re a good pilot, otherwise you wouldn’t have drawn this mission. Even impossible missions serve a purpose. Not every mission is going to be a glorious victory. We are good at what we do. We are not perfect and we are not invincible. But we learn from everything we do! Now get a hold of yourself, count to 100 and clear your mine. Tell me, did you learn anything out there during this mission?”
I closed my eyes, I counted to 100. I cleared my head and breather deeply. When I felt the calm return, I spoke up. LGN Lightwind, I apologize. I was a bit out of place there. Now that you mention it, I did learn one thing. As I flew through the minefield at speed and jinking out of the way of the laser bolts, I noticed some of the ion mines where disabling other mines as they tried to hit me. I even had a launch warning from one of the missile mines when I did not even fire on it, it must have been triggered by another mine. In the same situation again, I could take some time flying high speed through the mine field avoiding the laser blasts and let the mines take each other out for me. That is if I had the time to do so.
Very good LCL Dolaree. This is why we fly the hard missions, to learn what it takes to better defeat the enemy. Wow you did not complete the mission, the next time this happens we may have a victory. That is what is to be learned. Now head to the Bar and Grill, you got a drink on me waiting for you. Dismissed.
