X-Wing
Instructions
Reporting Rules
- Your pilot file must have run the mission exactly one time on
Tour of Duty
mode. Create a new pilot file for each attempt. - You may not destroy your ships on your own side, of the same IFF (color), unless the mission requires it in the briefing.
- Fly with the default settings:
You have Limited Weapons
,You are Vulnerable
, andStarfighter Collisions are On
. - You may not modify the mission, your pilot file, or the game engine (including ship statistics). You are responsible for any modifications that occur when using original files with third-party tools, even if only viewing content.
- Video proof is encouraged if you are competing for the highest score on a mission.
All X-Wing reports will be recalculated according to the RS scoring chart below. Because different versions of X-Wing have different in-game scores, we use a standard scoring chart. PBF missions before 309 used an older scoring system active at the time.

Installing Custom Missions
Download the custom mission that you wish to fly. Unzip it. Rename the .XWI
file to DEFECT.XWI
, and the .BRF
file to DEFECT.BRF
. The filenames are not case sensitive, so defect.xwi
would also work.
Select your X-Wing version below for further custom mission installations.
Open Steam. In the LIBRARY
area, find the list of games on the left, and right-click on STAR WARS™: X-Wing Special Edition
. Select Properties
, then LOCAL FILES
, then BROWSE LOCAL FILES...
, and open the remastered
folder.
Mission files will be found by going to the folders X-Wing Data
, then MISSION
. You will be replacing DEFECT.XWI
and DEFECT.BRF
with the custom mission you downloaded.
Open Steam. In the LIBRARY
area, find the list of games on the left, and right-click on STAR WARS™: X-Wing Special Edition
. Select Properties
, then LOCAL FILES
, then BROWSE LOCAL FILES...
, and open the classic
folder.
Mission files will be found by going to the folder MISSION
. You will be replacing DEFECT.XWI
and DEFECT.BRF
with the custom mission you downloaded.
We do not recommend playing custom missions with this version of X-Wing, due to the difficulty of installing them. We recommend using X-Wing Classic instead, if you want the DOS experience. If you really want to use this version, see Other Installations
below.
The X-Wing folder is located at C:\GOG Games\Star Wars - X-Wing (1998)
by default.
Mission files will be found by going to the folders X-Wing Data
, then MISSION

and DEFECT.BRF
with the custom mission you downloaded.
The X-Wing folder is located at C:\GOG Games\Star Wars - X-Wing (1993)
by default.
Mission files will be found by going to the folder MISSION
. You will be replacing DEFECT.XWI
and DEFECT.BRF
with the custom mission you downloaded.

For those using an original version of the game, instead of the repackaged Steam or GOG.com versions, basic custom mission installation involves finding the MISSION
directory of X-Wing, and replacing DEFECT.XWI
and DEFECT.BRF
with the custom mission you downloaded.
X-Wing DOS CD requires the XCD or XCDR program for installing custom missions. There are text files included that will assist with installation. These programs should be run in DOSBox.
X-Wing for Mac will require a Mac emulator such as Basilisk II or SheepShaver (unless you have an old Mac available), and the Mac X-Wing patch.
Now your mission should be installed! Load X-Wing, and create a new pilot file, named anything you like. Enter Spaceport
, and select New Tour
. Choose Tour I
and Enter Tour of Duty
. You should see the briefing for your custom mission. If so, you are ready to go! Note that the installation instructions above are for New Missions
, so if you don't see the mission, press Esc
and check that you have that setting correct (this doesn't apply to original X-Wing DOS).
To submit a report on any X-Wing mission, you must create a new pilot for every run of the mission, to create a clean pilot file. You also must run the mission as part of a Tour of Duty
, not Historical Combat
, for better statistics tracking. For more scoreboard rules, see above. You can find your pilot file in the folder indicated for your particular X-Wing version above. It will be called YOURNAME.PLT
in that folder — replace YOURNAME
with your actual pilot name.
▼ Other Installation Options
If you're flying just for fun, you don't have to worry about clean pilot files or flying exclusively as Tour of Duty missions.
For timed missions, you can install as WAISTEM.XWI
and WAISTEM.BRF
and fly the mission as Historical Combat
, X-Wing Mission 1
.
If you want to fly an entire custom tour in sequence, you can rename more than just DEFECT.XWI
and DEFECT.BRF
, and replace a whole set of missions so that the sequence flows naturally in-game. See below for the full list of default mission files.
You can also edit in-game tour information itself by using a third-party editor such as the X-Wing Tour of Duty Editor (XW-TOD), which gives you more flexibility when working with whole tours, including changing the total number of missions in the tour.
Some of the tours and missions in the database have special instructions or installation programs. You may want to peruse a readme
file if available. Some of these are only packaged with entire tours.
